Asheville Recap & Life Lately

Whew, where has the time gone?

How is it already May?

Better yet, how is it May 11th?!

Bah!

Asheville was wonderful. We enjoyed countless local beers, the Biltmore Estate gardens in full bloom, beautiful historic accommodations, and of course, amazing food. Here are some photos from our Asheville adventure!

If you’ve got a free weekend this summer, make your way to Asheville and be sure keep in mind where to…

STAY // Rankin House Inn or the 1900 Inn on Montford.

EAT // Cúrate, Tupelo Honey Cafe, Corner Kitchen, Table, Barley’s Taproom & Pizzeria, and let’s be honest… there are far too many to list.

DRINK // Asheville Brewing Co., Hi-Wire Brewing, Green Man Brewery, Twin Leaf Brewery, Burial Beer Co., and if you’re into cocktails… Nightbell (owned by Head Chef Katie Button of Cúrate).

DO // Brewery tours, visit the Biltmore Estate (and don’t forget to do the wine tasting and enjoy live music on the lawn in Antler Hill Village), check the calendar for Asheville Community Theatre, drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, or just kick it at your awesome B&B.

By the way, many of you already know via Facebook… but I am very excited to announce that I am the newest sales associate at Dovecote at Fearrington Village! Yep, got engaged at Fearrington, got married at Fearrington, and now working at Fearrington. It’s basically a dream come true. I’m so thrilled to be a part of such an amazing team. Also, the beautiful peony at the top of this post is a recent Fearrington garden snap!

Enjoy your week, and stay cool!

Setting the Scene for Spring

I’m going to be honest with you — I’m not ready for temperatures in the 80s.

And if it has to be hot and humid in April, I’m going to need someone to get me to the coast ASAP.

But here we are.

Mid-April.

Birds chirping away.

Rain and humidity.

Bees angrily hovering over me as I water patio plants.

Pollen rapidly recreating the Dirty Thirties.

My hydrangea begging to be watered 4 times a day.

All that complaining aside, I’m so excited to share my latest Target finds with you! Our patio furniture desperately needed new cushions and some pops of color, so here’s what I decided on for the front porch.

I’m playing up the coastal colors, since our home’s exterior paint is (to me, at least) reminiscent of a Caribbean cottage! Still working on arranging plants and things, so I’ll share more photos soon. After all, I’m just dying to show you our bright yellow front door all over again.

The herbs (rosemary, thyme, oregano, basil, sage, and cilantro) are all doing well — trying my best to keep them watered in this heat.

I hung out with my Mom earlier in the week and she whipped up a delicious (and simple!) warm spinach salad with quinoa, broiled shiitake mushrooms, and crumbled feta. The dressing was a classic mix of olive oil, red wine vinegar, salt, and cracked black pepper. So good!

In other news, our wedding is featured on Chatter, the Fearrington Village blog!

Waiting for Snow…

Precipitation of a snowy/icy form has begun!

It actually snowed a TEENSY bit while we were sipping Carménère at UnVine’d in Cary after our delicious Valentine’s Day dinner this weekend!

Speaking of Valentine’s Day, how gorgeous are these colorful tulips that Richard gave me?!

Did you get a beautiful bouquet from your Valentine? I just love having that little burst of color in the house during these dreary and cold days.

Ellie is not thrilled about the impending cold weather.

I’ll be making that pretty polenta dish again tonight. Easy and delicious. I found the recipe here — I used homemade basil pesto instead of spinach pesto and added my own twist with the balsamic glaze drizzle!

Stay warm and safe — we’re opening some wine and playing a board game tonight!

Welcoming Fall

So, I finally have a free moment to write a blog post, woo!

I’ve spent this rainy Wednesday doing some interior fall decorating. Our windows have been open for a few days now, and it’s actually gotten CHILLY inside! The kitties are starting to find warm places to curl up around the living room — blankets on the couch and fuzzy spots on their little cat trees.

It’s so cute.

I’m sure they wish we’d go ahead and close the windows, but I’ve been waiting a long time for this cool weather!

Here’s a quick photo-story of today’s decorating accomplishments.

Mini pumpkins and gourds

I love placing pumpkins and playing with my silk flower arrangements (yeah, we can’t really *DO* real flowers in our kitty-friendly home).

Top shelf

Speaking of cats, check out the little kitties on this shelf. An old cat-shaped wine bottle shares the top shelf with a beautiful, hand-painted ceramic kitty (it’s a coin bank!) that we picked up in Cozumel last month.

Pumpkin spice everything

Not the best tea, but the tin will make for a great fall decoration for years to come!

Mini pumpkins

Bookshelf

By the door

Lovely “fairytale” pumpkins from Trader Joe’s… And likely the last time I’ll see my flip flops this year.

Table

My favorite spot to decorate is most certainly our buffet table.

Festive arrangement

We’re throwing a Halloween / Birthday party in late October, so I’ll be adding more and more Halloween-esque decor as the weeks go on. I can’t wait — Richard’s birthday is shortly before Halloween and mine is the week after!

What is your favorite thing about early fall?

And no, I haven’t had a Pumpkin Spice Latte yet!

After the Rain

The storms have been frequent and harsh around here lately. The hot and humid weather has returned, too, which makes venturing outside even more unbearable. The plants on our front porch and patio are soaking up every drop of water and each ray of sun, though!

Peppers

Droplets

And Richard got us a snazzy new hook for our bird feeder!

Here’s hoping we get a cold-front soon… I am ready for crisp fall air!
