Packing for Asheville, NC

We are so thrilled to be heading off to Asheville later this week for a long weekend getaway!

Back in February of last year, Rich and I spent a weekend there for Valentine’s Day (as an engaged couple!) and then Rich celebrated his bachelor party there back in October with the guys.

The weather should be sunny, but cool, so I’ll be dressing in casual and comfy layers. I’m taking a few favorites from my little springtime fashion roundup!

The fun, printed Aspire Ankle Pants are certainly coming along, as they are my new go-to pant for spring. Lightweight and quick-drying… what’s not to love? I’m bringing a breathable Sugar Wash Tank and a couple of scarves for layering, too.

This time around, we’ve got quite a list planned:

1. Visiting Biltmore Estate for the Dressing Downton exhibit
2. Drinking at more than half a dozen local breweries (duh)
3. Seeing A Streetcar Named Desire at Asheville Community Theatre
4. Eating a romantic Spanish dinner at Cúrate
5. Checking out some antiques shops
6. Lunching at Tupelo Honey Cafe
7. Indulging in tasty treats from Vortex Doughnuts

Hello, Weekend!

The truth is, dearest readers (few of you as there may be), I had every intention of bringing you a healthy and delicious Friday Feast recipe today.

I woke up, made my coffee, checked my emails, and then decided to try baking black bean brownies.

LET ME JUST TELL YOU.

Nope.

Not good.

Literally a #ICantEven experience.

To be fair, the recipe itself didn’t even seem very appealing. However, I was convinced that I could make a few tweaks here and there to better my chances at these brownies not tasting like straight-up, well, you know. I’m a fixer. I’m a revamper. (I don’t even know if that’s really a word.) BUT NO, I was wrong.

I know, there are loads of black bean brownie recipes lingering out there in the internet universe, but why?! You’re making BROWNIES. Sometimes I just have to tell myself, “Cassie, not everything has to be healthified.” I mean, a brownie is an indulgence. Let it be just that.

Which brings us to 11:54am and no awesome healthy brownie recipe to share. You can’t win ’em all.

Whew, with that out of the way, I can share some fun weekend plans with you!

I get to see both of my siblings this weekend! My brother is driving down from D.C. and my sister is driving up from Wilmington. Patrick and I will get some bro-sis time in this afternoon at The Roost (beer garden at Fearrington Village), with Richard joining us a bit later. It’s definitely a beautiful day for being outdoors and soaking up the sun. Tomorrow, a few of us are heading to Brewgaloo in downtown Raleigh for an afternoon of (more) beer samples and live music. Oh, and rain. …Yay!

We’ll also be celebrating something quite special — I accepted a job offer!

I’m so so so excited, and as much as I want to share the details with you, I think it’s better that I wait until after I’ve at least filled out the paperwork and officially joined the company. Ha! Seems more appropriate, right?

I hope that you have a really lovely weekend.

Oh, and if you feel the urge to bake brownies…

TREAT YO SELF.

Blue Apron Giveaway! – (Winner Announced)

Helloooooooo Monday!

Let’s have some fun with a little giveaway.

Yep, a freebie!

Besides, I owe it to you since I missed Friday Feast last week.

Richard and I received a free 1-week trial to Blue Apron from a friend, and we loved it so much that we’ve stuck with it for three weeks now! Time to spread that good karma around, folks.

Yes, I realize that this adds to the seemingly never-ending list of subscriptions that I’ve tried. Blue Apron is crazy awesome, though. Trust me on this.

When you set up your account details, you enter any dietary preferences (fish, meat, shellfish, vegetarian, etc) and are then sent 3 meals each week (for a total of six meals if you opt for the 2-person plan like we did). If you are going to be out of town, or if the upcoming menu simply doesn’t appeal to you, skip that week! You only pay for the weeks that you are opted-in. Be sure to opt-out of any future week’s delivery at least 7 days prior to your delivery by 12pm.

The ingredients are delivered in a special, entirely recyclable, refrigerated package — right to your doorstep!

Check out some my snaps of our Blue Apron creations:

By the way, these meals are HUGE. Sometimes we have leftovers for lunch the next day, which is quite a treat! It’s been an amazing way to get Rich and I in the kitchen, cooking together. Plus, it takes the guesswork out of meal-planning on busy weeks.

So, want to try Blue Apron for 1 week on us?

To enter, answer the following question in the comments section of this post:

What is your favorite healthy snack?

Winner will be announced at 12pm EST on Monday, April 27th!

7 Brilliant Beauty Buys

During the process of organizing underneath my bathroom sink, I was moved to write my first-ever beauty post!

Slash… procrastinate the much-needed organization under the sink.

Moving on, though!

Folks, these are products that I use almost every single day. They are a part of my routine. I wouldn’t share something with you that I didn’t absolutely love.

Best part is: six of these products are under $15 each, yay!

I’ll get to those first.

7 Brilliant Beauty Buys // www.beetandbaguette.com

Almay’s Clear Complexion Makeup with BlemisHeal Technology – $12.79, Target – This liquid foundation has a scant amount of Salicylic Acid, so you don’t have to feel bad about applying makeup, even if you feel a pimple coming on.

Jelly Pong Pong’s Glow Getter Highlighter – $12.75, BirchBox – A lightweight, pearlescent shimmer gel that is great for just under the brows, or to dab on the cheekbones. It’s a tiny bottle, but a little goes a long way!

Maybelline’s Face Studio Master Glaze Glisten Blush Stick – $7.99, Target – Stunning, natural, blendable color that won’t dry your skin out like a powder blush. I’m loving the Coral Sheen shade for warm weather days!

Maybelline’s Line Stiletto Ultimate Precision Liquid Eyeliner – $4.79, Target – Does this one really need an explanation? If you know me at all, you know I love a good cat eye.

mark.’s Glowdacious Illuminating Powder – $13, Avon – I’ve had the exact product that you see in the photo for years. Literally, years. Still haven’t gotten to the bottom of the compact. This shimmer powder / bronzer includes multiple shades, so you can use a lighter color for the inner eyelids and a darker shade for your cheekbones!

Revlon’s Colorburst Balm Stain – $6.89, Target – Want a lip stain that isn’t sticky or scarily unnatural looking? This creamy balm stick is the answer. Subtle, yet lasting color in a no-mess crayon.

The final product in the photo, my friends, is $22 from BirchBox and still deserves to be on this list, even if it’s just because of the scent.

Yes.

The scent of Beauty Protector’s Protect and Detangle Leave-In Conditioner is utterly tantalizing. I received a good-sized sample of it in my very first BirchBox, and I’m still falling in love with the scent every time I comb it through my fresh-out-of-the-shower hair.

And you guessed it.

I adore BirchBox.

Love samples? Considering signing up. $10/month, that’s like two Starbucks drinks!

Besides, who wouldn’t want the adorable boxes?!

Friday Feast – Pasta with Garlicky Broccoli Rabe

Sharing this deliciousness with you from the road today!

As we make our way to D.C. for the weekend, I’m in the passenger seat and Richard is navigating that “fun” little stretch of I-95 that corrals the (currently engulfed in a blanket of pollen-y haze) city of Richmond.

And now onto the main event: with the perfect amount of spicy heat and salty parmesan, Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen has stolen the hearts of the Marshall household (okay, with the exception of the cats — Gretchen thinks it could use some crab) with this ridiculously simple dish.

You can find the 7-ingredient recipe here.

By the way, we are weird.

We prefer this dish cold.

Yep, pasta salad style.

Minus the mayo, of course!

I mean, really, though… Swap the broccoli rabe out for spinach. Try it with tortellini. Add diced zucchini or Roma tomatoes.

Make it your own!
