She’s Here!

Just a quick post this evening — Richard’s mum arrived from South Africa (via a week in England with Richard’s sister, Julie) today!

I’m so happy to finally meet her and can’t wait to show her around the area by visiting our favorite restaurants, breweries, and music venues.

Aaaaaaand even though we both had a few glasses of wine, I love this picture that Rich snapped of us.

Bahahaha!

Cheers!

Kara’s 18th Birthday

Amidst the painting and cleaning chaos going on at our house this weekend, today is my sister’s 18th birthday!

Happy birthday, Kara! I’m so lucky to have such a caring, smart, and beautiful baby sister. And I’m thrilled that she’s going to be my Maid of Honor!

Here’s a quick visual recap of the weekend so far…

We took Kara to Fearrington on Friday evening. We showed her the wedding ceremony and reception venues, the gardens, the restaurants, and everything else that the beautiful property has to offer -- the Beltie cows included! Before bringing Kara along, Fearrington had been a little hideaway that only Richard and I had been to -- even my parents haven't been yet! We had a lot of fun listening to the live folk music and eating delicious local cheeses.

The three of us spent the evening listening to live folk music, eating delicious local cheeses, and devouring an amazing s’mores dessert.

The current project. These bookcases (we have a pair) will be white with yellow shelf-backs.

For dinner, Kara picked Fiction Kitchen in downtown Raleigh. It's a vegan/vegetarian restaurant, that began as a kickstarter project -- how cool is that?! I got the vegan nori rolls with sashimi-style tofu and a mango chutney. Delicious!

Richard and I picked up Kara's favorite Gigi's cupcake, Cookie Dough, and added "18" candles for her special day!

I hope you enjoy that cupcake, Kara. My mouth is watering looking at that picture…

For my local readers, I hope you’ve had a chance to enjoy this beautiful weather!

Just don’t forget your Zyrtec.

Busy Days and Easy Pizza

Life has been so busy lately that I honestly feel like I can’t even take a moment to stop and catch my breath.

Richard’s Mum (love saying that) arrives on Monday, and I feel like there are still 87562481 things that I’d like to get done around the house before she gets here! I know I shouldn’t stress over it — she’s family now — but (ask Richard) I just love playing host way too much! I love arranging things in a bedroom, making a guest’s bed look what I like to call “hotel-style”, putting little toiletries out for a guest, serving dinner and drinks, the works! I just feel unprepared because of how crazy my work life has been.

I have gotten another thing checked off the wedding to-do list, though — I have decided on a bridesmaid dress for my ladies! Not going to share on here, though. It’s gotta be a surprise, folks! Guess you’ll just have to wait for the wedding photos to come out this winter, ha!

I made my favorite super-simple naan bread pizza for dinner tonight. Yep. I didn’t make the dough OR the sauce.

Go on, judge all you want.

The whole thing literally took me 20 minutes, including baking time.

See, now you are all like, “Whaaat? Not even gonna judge her for being so lazy.”

Throw it all together. Put it in the oven at 350 degrees. Check on it after about 10 minutes. Turn the broiler on high and stick around to watch for the cheese to get all bubbly and golden brown in some spots. This will probably only take 3-4 minutes.

And BAM.

DONE.

Comes out looking like the picture at the top of this post, kitty paws not included. Also, I know you are loving that it looks like cafeteria pizza.

By the way, check out this tasty recipe for Banana Chocolate Chip Bread — I made it on Monday night and IT’S ALREADY GONE.

The last two pieces, before they were destroyed by Richard and I…

Anyways, I hope this week is treating you well. I could use a bubble bath. Or another glass of Pinot. Cheers!

Living Room Makeover – Part 2

The living room painting is done!!

Here are a few more process photos from this weekend…

But yep, Richard finished up painting the living room/kitchen this afternoon — so now we get to think about arranging and hanging artwork! I can’t wait. I’m currently working on priming and painting the end tables, bookshelves, and coffee table. We absolutely love the wall color, Valspar’s “Gypsy Teal”. It’s going to be really exciting to see it all come together.

I found this photo while searching for color palettes — and I’m really digging the yellow and coral/peach.

I also made Banana Chocolate Chip Bread tonight. Yum. I’ll share that recipe next time.

Really looking forward to tomorrow evening, as my sister Kara will be trying on bridesmaids dresses! I hope we can find “the one”!

Wedding: A Theme

Countdown to “I do.” – 268 days!

Before getting engaged, I knew very little about what I wanted my wedding to look like. I wasn’t one of those little girls with a scrapbook brimming with magazine clippings of dresses and bouquets or hand-sketched plans for a variety of seating charts…

What would my wedding “theme” be?

I honestly didn’t even know that weddings had “themes”.

I guess I thought that you just picked the colors you like, picked the music you like, and invited the people you like… and kinda threw it all together.

However, now that I am planning my own wedding, I see that those things are the theme. More than likely, the different items and aspects that one likes, essentially, one’s “taste”, will coincide and overlap in some way.

Which leads me to my next point — I hope that whatever I choose, those small overlaps (as minuscule as some of the details may be) will make the event feel complete.

When I think of my dream wedding, I think of words like:

elegant
vintage
old-world
romantic
timeless
luxurious

I guess we’ll see where that leads me!
