food, travel, lifestyle, and a hearty serving of motherhood

Month: April 2013

Family time, and big news!

Okay, I think I am finally returning to my spot in reality after a whirlwind of events this past week!

Last Friday, I drove up to Washington D.C. to stay with my brother for a long weekend.

He rents the basement apartment of a pretty cool row house in walking distance to the national mall, shopping, Whole Foods Market, awesome eateries, etc.

We had a great brother-sister week that included the Cherry Blossom Festival, fancy cocktails, the best calamari of our lives (on pizza, believe it or not), a day at Busch Gardens, an Andrew McMahon show, vegan recipe tips from new friends, minor sunburns due to the most AMAZING weather imaginable, JUMBO SLICE PIZZA, and plenty of tasty beer flights.

Patrick and I always have a blast together, so I’m thankful that I was able to take a couple of days off to hang with him!

Seriously, though… Calamari on pizza at Farmers Fishers Bakers. Why did I not think of this?

Also, grocery store sushi is always a good idea. Especially when it’s from somewhere as fancy as Dean & Deluca.

Our homeboy Andrew put on an AMAZING show at the 930 Club…

For reference, here’s a picture of Patrick and I at our first ever Andrew McMahon show (Something Corporate) in 2005…

And here’s one of us from the show last weekend (the fact that Patrick is still rocking NCSU colors cracks me up)…

This beer quite possibly made my entire weekend…

And when I got home, I was happy to see that my little baby cilantro is producing leaves!

In other news (AHEM, DRUMROLL, PLZ), I accepted a job offer on Friday! I start May 6th, so that gives me at least ONE good reason to throw a Cinco de Mayo fiesta, right?!

I would love an excuse to make these Vegetarian Chilaquiles from Como, Come, Cami

Okay, my mouth is watering. Time for lunch.

I hope life’s been treating you well, too!

Life in Full Bloom

Hibernation mode is (cough, hopefully) finally over!

Not for Merlin, though.

He and the other kitties hibernate all year long, I’m afraid.

But seriously, what a gorgeous weekend.

We’ve had amazing weather here in North Carolina lately, and I made a point to take full advantage of it these past two days.

For weeks now, I’ve been dying to plant herb and vegetable seeds along with flowers and bulbs, but the evenings were still seeing the occasional frost, so I was forced to wait.

Today, I got my wish.

Richard stained these lovely new planters…

I planted these little cuties…

Richard also hung some beautiful hanging basket planters that we found.

See him hard at work?

My teeny tiny cilantro seedling got some sun today…

I am pretty pleased with the fact that I planted a handful of various herb/veggie seeds. Fingers crossed that they actually grow!

Guess I should have been crossing my toes, too…

OHMYGOD, I almost forgot to share this adorableness that I found at Target…

I mean, really. Who wouldn’t want to garden using tools as cute as these?!

So, it’s pretty evident that I’m ready for springtime…

Are you?
